Orientation by untrained pigeons requires the sun.

چکیده
Untrained homing pigeons released on sunny days oriented homeward regardless of the direction of the release site from the loft. Similar pigeons released under total overcast vanished randomly, whereas experienced birds released on the same days at the same sites oriented homeward. Apparently untrained pigeons require the sun for orientation but experienced pigeons do not.

The Orientation of Untrained Pigeons: a Dichotomy in the Homing Process
INTRODUCTION It had been shown (Matthews, 19516) that reasonably accurate orientation and homing could be obtained with young pigeons after a minimal training up to 25 miles. Recently Kramer & St Paul (1952) and Kramer (1953) have obtained similar results with older pigeons trained up to 10 miles only. Training thus appeared to be rather less essential than had been supposed, and to investigate...
متن کاملPartial experience with the arc of the sun is sufficient for all-day sun compass orientation in homing pigeons, Columba livia.
The ability of animals to learn to use the sun for orientation has been explored in numerous species. In birds, there is conflicting evidence about the experience needed for sun compass orientation to develop. The prevailing hypothesis is that birds need entire daytime exposure to the arc of the sun to use the sun as an orientation cue. However, there is also some evidence indicating that, even...
متن کاملMagnetic Fields and the Orientation of Homing Pigeons under Sun
Applying a magnetic field of o-1 Gs (1 gauss = io~*T) to the heads of pigeons homing from unfamiliar release sites significantly increased the scatter of the birds' vanishing bearings. A magnetic field of 0-3 gauss caused no difference between the orientation of birds wearing coils with either their north or south pole up. But a field of o-6 gauss (equal to that of the Earth) produced a small d...
متن کاملLearning strategies in matching to sample: if-then and configural learning by pigeons.
Pigeons learned a matching-to-sample task with a split training-set design in which half of the stimulus displays were untrained and tested following acquisition. Transfer to the untrained displays along with no novel-stimulus transfer indicated that these pigeons learned the task (partially) via if-then rules. Comparisons to other performance measures indicated that they also partially learned...
متن کاملThe roles of the sun and the landscape in pigeon homing.
It seems reasonable to assume that pigeons use visual features in the landscape for orientation when they are homing over familiar terrain. Experimental evidence to prove or disprove this possibility is, however, difficult to obtain. Here, we link the problem with the observation that deflections of initial orientation caused by clock-shift are often smaller than predicted on a pure sun compass...
